![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | The Grounds (8 sub-boards) Hogwarts is hidden from Muggle eyes. The castle is bewitched so that if a Muggle looks at it, all they see is a moldering old ruin with a sign over the entrance saying DANGER, DO NOT ENTER, UNSAFE. It might also be Unplottable . The castle is "a huge, rambling, quite scary-looking castle, with a jumble of towers and battlements."

![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | Honeydukes Sweetshop A sweetshop, owned by Ambrosius Flume and his wife, which is filled with "shelves upon shelves of the most succulent-looking sweets imaginable". In addition to the standard wizarding candy that is sold there, the owners also make their own fudge and chocolate. For obvious reasons, the shop is quite a popular destination for Hogwarts students when visiting Hogsmeade on the weekends.
Down in the cellar of the shop, amidst the boxes and wooden crates and known to only a select few people, is a trap door in the dusty floor - which opens to reveal a secret passageway to Hogwarts.

![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | Big Ben A clock tower was built at Westminster in 1288, with the fine-money of Ralph Hengham, Chief Justice of the King's Bench.
The present tower was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire on the night of 22 October 1834.
The new Parliament was built in a Neo-gothic style. Although Barry was the chief architect of the Palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower, which resembles earlier Pugin designs, including one for Scarisbrick Hall. The design for the Clock Tower was Pugin's last design before his final descent into madness and death, and Pugin himself wrote, at the time of Barry's last visit to him to collect the drawings: "I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his bell tower & it is beautiful."

![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries (7 sub-boards) Founded in late 1500s or early 1600s by Mungo Bonham, St. Mungo's Hospital is the primary (and likely only) wizarding hospital in Britain.
Located in an abandoned department store in London, the hospital's Healers treat wizards for all sorts of magic-related illnesses and injuries, and in extreme circumstances has been known to treat Muggles as well. The hospital's logo is a wand and a bone, crossed, and donations are welcome.
The entrance to St. Mungo's is concealed behind an abandoned red-brick London department store called Purge and Dowse, Ltd. on a Muggle street. Unlike, say, the Leaky Cauldron, St. Mungo's is visible to passing Muggles, who merely believe the sign on the front that the store is "Closed for Refurbishment."
In the front window, a dummy dressed in outdated styles serves as the gatekeeper; wizards wanting to enter do so by talking to the dummy, and then walking straight through the window.
A sign inside the hospital by the front desk reads: "If you are unsure where to go, incapable of normal speech, or unable to remember why you are here, our Welcome Witch will be pleased to help."

![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | Diagon Alley (24 sub-boards) Tapping just the right brick in the wall behind the Leaky Cauldron in London ("Three up...two across...") will reveal an archway which is a portal into Diagon Alley, a long cobbled street where is to be found a strange and exciting assortment of shops and restaurants. It is unquestionably the hub of commerce in the British wizarding world, with virtually every wizarding business stationed there. Consequently, the demand for space here is steep, and rent costs "loads of Galleons".

![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | Azkaban Far out in the icy waters of the North Sea lies a tiny island that is home to one of the most terrible places on earth: Azkaban, the wizarding prison.
Azkaban is a terrible place. Prisoners were for years guarded by Dementors, horrible creatures who have been described as "sightless soul-sucking fiends." They feed on positive emotions, which means that after spending much time in the prison, the prisoners lose all hope and all good feelings and thoughts. They are forced to relive the darkest, most horrible memories of their lives. Some go mad, others simply despair and die .

![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | Beauxbatons Academy of Magic Headmistress: Olympe Maxime Location: France Uniforms: robes of fine silk; attendants of the carriage wear pale blue Coat of Arms: two crossed golden wands on a powder-blue field, each emitting three stars
The Academy's building is called the Palace of Beauxbatons, and unlike Hogwarts Castle it does not contain suits of armour. Rather than a Great Hall as at Hogwarts, the Palace contains a Dining Chamber, which is elaborately decorated at Christmastime but in a different style than that used at Hogwarts. The scholastic system at the Academy is also arranged differently than that at Hogwarts; instead of sitting Ordinary Wizarding Levels or their equivalent at the end of five years, Academy students sit exams after six years.

![[ ]](http://images.proboards.com/new/off.png) | Durmstrang Institute Headmaster: Igor Karkaroff Location: a castle in northern Europe, far enough north that days are very short in winter Uniform: furs, blood-red robes
The Durmstrang Intitute also has a castle, but it is not as big as Hogwarts, having only four floors. Its fires are only lit for magical purposes. The grounds are quite extensive and include lakes and mountains. Durmstrang has the reputation of teaching Dark Arts, and it does not admit Muggle-born students. The name Durmstrang comes from the German phrase "Sturm und Drang" which translates to "Storm and Stress." The phrase refers to a movement in German literature in the late 1700s which emphasized "subjectivity and the unease of man in contemporary society".
